The charities listed below have agreed to be SFA beneficiaries, allowing us to support their programs to get books where they are needed.
More beneficiaries will be added, as we strive to cover many countries. If you are a charitable foundation wishing to join us on SFA, send a note via our contact page and we will get back to you.

Both authors and supporters of SFA can choose their best options for donating books.
If you do not wish to donate your title or titles to any of the beneficiaries listed below, please donate to a charity of your choice all the same and forward your recommendation for a beneficiary not listed.

The Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation
[ALNF] is dedicated to raising language, literacy and numeracy standards in Australia and raises funds to develop, implement and sustain innovative projects for individuals, families and communities.

ALNF believes that literacy and numeracy skills are a critical element in enabling all people to fulfil their dreams. Without these skills individuals, families and whole communities are powerless in realising their full potential.

ALNF teaches marginalised Australians how to read and write. ALNF also supports a broad range of individuals (teachers, carers, healthcare workers, community workers, volunteers) in building on their skills to develop good literacy practices in their families and communities.

ALNF’s approaches, which are tailored to the specific needs of individual groups and communities, are uniquely effective – and efficient – in delivering observable outcomes and creating real impact.

Our Mission
• To promote awareness of the chronic debilitation wrought by poor literacy to individuals, their families, communities and the nation.
• To principally engage in the direct provision of speech, numeracy and literacy services to individuals in poverty, sickness, self distress, misfortune, disability, destitution and helplessness.
• To directly assist persons of all ages with language, literacy and numeracy needs, difficulties and disabilities who are unable to afford assistance.
• To develop, teach and train others in sound methods of teaching and supply appropriate services to those in need.
• To facilitate both professional and public access to information about literacy and numeracy.

A Book Can Give Hope.
Read Between The Bars is a books to prisoners collective based in sunny Tucson, Arizona. We send free books to prisoners in Arizona. We have donated over 400 books to the Pinal County Jail library, and we have sent 200 books to individual prisoners fulfilling their requests.
We are seeking donations and opportunities for further fundraising so that we can expand our core mission of improving prisoner's lives by exposing them to education, new ideas, or just the escape of a good story.
For years, programs throughout the nation have been distributing books, free of charge, to prisoners. A book can change the life of a prisoner: it can give an escape from the tedium of prison life, teach new skills, and open up interests in fields that can benefit the prisoner and society at large.

Since 1994, the Women’s Prison Book Project (WPBP) has provided women and transgender –identified persons in prison with free reading materials covering a wide range of topics from law and education (dictionaries, GED, etc.) to fiction, politics, history, and women’s health. We are an all volunteer, grassroots organization. We seek to build connections with those behind the walls, and to educate those of us on the outside about the realities of prison and the justice system.

Of the more than two million people confined in U.S. prisons and jails, over 150,000 are women. Eighty percent of these women are there for non–violent crimes, such as shoplifting, prostitution, drug related convictions, and fraud. Of the women convicted of violent crimes, the vast majority were convicted for defending themselves or their children from abuse. More than 1/2 of all women in prison are women of color, and two–thirds of women in prison have at least one child under eighteen. Most of these mothers had primary custody of their children before going to prison.

These facts mean that women in prison have specific needs for particular kinds of information: material on families, children, women's self–help, women's health, and legal aid pertaining to women who fight back against their abusers. There are also many lesbian, bisexual, and transgender prisoners who often have trouble obtaining information that is relevant to their lives. As new prisons are built to warehouse the growing number of incarcerated people in the U.S., the meager resources previously available to prisoners are being cut or limited to only a few. WPBP is one place where women/transgender persons in prison can get information that is often unavailable from any other source. WPBP works to support prisoners; and through that solidarity work to empower prisoners themselves and build connections through prison walls.

We recognize that prisons and the entire “justice” system are about controlling and suppressing the lives/movements of the poor, women, and all people of color. The U.S. has the highest incarceration rate in the world, and that is no accident. We urge all progressive people to include prison issues as an integral part of the struggle for sweeping social change. In keeping with this view we also acknowledge that as activists on the outside it is vital to provide whatever material support that WPBP can to women political prisoners and prisoners of war in U.S. prisons and jails.

Mission Australia is a national non-denominational Christian community service organisation that has been transforming the lives of Australians in need for almost 150 years.

We operate more than 450 services across metropolitan, rural and regional Australia – in every state and territory.

This year we assisted more than 330,000 people.

We are committed to creating a fairer Australia by eliminating disadvantage and transforming lives. Through our programs and services, we seek to eradicate homelessness, strengthen families and empower youth. We deliver entry level training and help unemployed people find permanent work.

Our founding purpose
Inspired by Jesus Christ, Mission Australia exists to meet human need and to spread the knowledge of the love of God.

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. So, we also ought to lay down our lives for others.” (1 John 3:16)

Our vision is to see a fairer Australia by enabling people in need to find pathways to a better life.
Walking alongside those in need, we help people discover:
• Pathways to strong families and healthy, happy children
• Pathways through a successful youth
• Pathways away from homelessness
• Pathways to skills and qualifications
• Pathways to sustainable employment.

Our core values
All Mission Australia staff work within our core values to help realise our vision. These values are:

Compassion: We are committed to being sensitive, understanding and caring in our service of each other and all people.

Integrity: We are committed to being honest, accountable, transparent and just in all our work and relationships.

Respect: We are committed to treating each person as we expect to be treated, offering love, acceptance and a voice of support in the face of life’s challenges.

Perseverance: We are committed to being the very best we can be, finding effective, creative and environmentally responsible ways to fulfil our mission.

Celebration: We are committed to recognising and celebrating the efforts and achievements of our staff, supporters and the people we help.

Older Native American starts school
To the staff of Books to Prisoners:
Received the books you sent and was really pleased with them. Thank you. I could not wait to get back to my cell. I will tell you a little about myself. I am a mixed breed ('Apache-Cherokee and Scotch') born in 1925 during the great depression. I dropped out of school and went to work with my father to help support our family. All my life I have been what the round eyes have called a stupid redskin, and I resented it. Now that I am in the twilight of my life, I have gone on and am getting an education. In September I will start my first quarter of college. I catch a lot of ribbing about it, but this is something I want. Even though I will never live to get out of prison, at least I can do something constructive with the time left. Thank you for the books. They will be put to good use. --Grey Fox, Ohio

Mission statement:
Books To Prisoners (BTP) is a Northwest-based nonprofit all-volunteer organization established in the early 1970s, that provides free books to prisoners in the United States. As government budgets are cut for prison programs that encourage literacy and education, and prison population increase dramatically, BTP makes a stand for effecting social change from the inside out.

BTP believes that books are tools for learning and opening minds to new ideas and possibilities. By sending books to prisoners, we hope to foster a love of reading, and encourage the pursuit of knowledge, empowerment, and self-improvement. BTP sends books at the request of prisoners on subjects including race/ethnicity/sexual orientation studies, history, politics, dictionaries/thesauruses, legal materials, structured educational materials, and many others. We do this at no cost to the prisoner because we understand that lack of funds should not be a barrier to education.

Education and literacy are remarkably low amongst prisoners, and prison library programs are being cut back in many prisons. Many prisons are also cutting back law library resources, one of the few ways many prisoners are able to access legal information. Likewise, many prisoners are allowed only a few hours each day, sometimes only one hour, to socialize or be involved in recreation. Many spend endless hours alone without access to creative outlets. BTP sends hundreds of books each month: educational materials, legal resources, as well as fiction. These books help prisoners learn and expand their horizons.

BTP also positively affects the broader community. In attracting mainstream volunteers/donors, and holding occasional benefits, BTP raises community awareness of the humanity and conditions of prisoners. BTP works collaboratively with University student groups, High School community service projects, church groups, and court-ordered offenders.

Mission statement:
Mother Teresa once wrote, “There must be a reason why some people can afford to live well. They must have worked for it. I only feel angry when I see waste. When I see people throwing away things that we could use.”

Each year in America, millions of books are destroyed, shredded, burned and thrown away. Equally, millions of children will never know the joy of owning a book. In Africa, the book famine is a harsh reality. Throughout the continent, five or six children share one book. Empty library shelves, are a steady reminder of Africa’s hunger for education. In Haiti, nearly fifty percent of the population remains illiterate and Creole literature scarce. In India, child labor is widespread as many parents are financially incapable of educating their children. In Kosova, the price of a Western medicine book is equal to the monthly salary of a doctor. And, our soldiers across the globe, sailors, marines and airmen carry on without access to books or any reading materials. In general, over eight-hundred-million people remain illiterate in today’s world, a figure likely to remain unaffected if current developments continue.

Thus, the staff of My One School Inc. strives make use of those books others are inclined to dispose, so others may live well. We believe that there is no better gift to a child, than the gift of education. Furthermore, we believe that money isn’t everything. One mustn’t feel the need to give money in order to help. Here, everyone is able to give. Every single individual, company, library, trust or foundation, can stumble upon a book, or a few, and contribute to our cause. This also means, YOU! We recognize that we all have books we have read once, but never will again, books that remain unopened, or those purposeless ones collecting dust in our shelves.

Going back to Mother Teresa who said, “Let us not be satisfied with just giving money. Money is not enough, money can be got, but they need your hearts to love them. So, spread your love everywhere you go.”

Books to Prisoners Olympia works to offset the dehumanizing effects of incarceration by sending quality used books free of charge to prisoners all over. We are entirely operated by volunteers, our library entirely stocked by donated books.

We’ve developed systems for everything from accounting to how best to categorize books on our shelves. Core volunteers take shifts as “keyholders” each week where they open and close the space for volunteers, and take on various extra organizing responsibilities. Some of these keyholding project organizers have been Jacob, Max, Alex Becker, JR, Laurel, and Emily. Many other volunteers have filled and wrapped requests, sought out & brought in new donations, worked to fundraise, sensibly organized the bookshelves, built new bookshelves, started the dumpster values $1 bin (an ongoing fundraiser), helped to build this website, and taken on numerous other tasks related to getting quality reading material out to prisoners requesting it.

After 12 years, Books to Prisoners Olympia still maintains a relationship with Books to Prisoners Seattle. Together with satellite organizations in Bellingham and Portland, we’ve managed in 2007 to “catch up” on letters! (Meaning, we are able to set to work filling a request when it arrives instead of adding it to the bottom of a stack. when an inmate requests books in January, they will likely get a package in January!) This is an accomplishment most prison book projects dream of and work years to attain.

See our history page at - http://btpolympia.org/history

BTP Olympia began in 1996 when Long Hair David, above, started a prison book project.

Mission statement:
Education Aid is working for the advancement of education in developing countries. It is a registered charity in England, managed by its trustees.

Education Aid has no political affiliation and receives no government support. It is run by voluntary help and donations.

When you hear someone say Educational Poverty it does not sound as bad as suffering from hunger and disease. However in the third world countries the problems of hunger and disease and many more are due to the lack of education in the first place.

Their educational institutions lack in essential learning material and equipment due to rampant poverty and neglect.

Education Aid collects books in UK and sends them to schools and universities in poor countries, our book donors include libraries, publishers, booksellers, schools, universities, professional bodies, industry and individuals. Overstock, damaged, older editions and review copies are also taken.

We also accept computers and other learning aids such as audio & video equipment.
